Read a bit, it will be good for you X

In collaboration with Cypher Billboard, ‘Read a bit’ explores the dynamics of accessible, public messaging and the act of reading, using traditional billboards, soundscapes, and essays.

By recognising the billboard’s historical role and its newer function as a community art platform, the work investigates how viewers consume public messages, often unconsciously, regardless of their active engagement. In a world driven by speed, fewer people—especially young individuals—make time to read, disregarding its value. The accessibility of a message in a public space also considers the socio-economic factors that can divide active readers from those who engage passively or not at all.

‘Read a bit’ explores the underappreciated unconscious act of reading. Advertising, for instance, is designed to be consumed passively, often without questioning the anonymous source or the underlying message. This project questions how we challenge these messages and the broader implications on both individuals and society.

The accompanying audio piece explores the intersection of conscious and unconscious listening, anonymous readings are interwoven with music, creating a hypnotic conversation about the act of reading and its impact on individuals.

The final component of the project is a series of essays, requiring conscious engagement to reflect on the meaning of the phrase, “Read a bit, it will be good for you x”, highlighting the critical and personal nature of reading.
